An Examination of the Incompatibility of Innate Infallibility with the Theory of Acquisition (Kasb) from the Perspective of the Ashʿarites

Abstract
The issue of prophetic infallibility is a central topic among theologians, and its various dimensions have been the subject of discussion throughout history. One of these dimensions is the relationship between infallibility and free will of the prophets, which this article examines from the perspective of the Ashʿarites. The Ashʿarites face a kind of incompatibility and contradiction in this area; because, according to the theory of acquisition (Kasb), they consider the realization of human actions to be solely dependent on divine power and do not attribute any role to human power and free will in realizing their actions. Therefore, the Ashʿarites define infallibility as the ability to obey God and the inability to commit sin, which in fact entails a form of determinism in infallibility; while they believe that the prophets possess free will in infallibility. This view leads to incompatibility and contradiction in this issue.
