English

The term “heedlessness” (ghafla) has often been examined by Sufis and ethicists from a psychological or virtue-ethical perspective. However, al-Ghazālī views this concept as being far more intricate, playing a central role in both his ontology and the study of the human nature. Meanwhile, the term “habit” in the mystical system of ʿAyn al-Quḍāt al-Hamadānī acquires a distinct semantic connotation, one that lacks precedent in earlier Sufi literature. In addition to this term, other concepts—such as black and white light, Muhammad and Iblis, and various binary oppositions like outer and inner, knowledge and ignorance, light and darkness, this world and the hereafter—feature prominently in ʿAyn al-Quḍāt’s mystical thought. These terms and ideas become his mental and linguistic motifs. However, the concept of habit stands out in particular due to its defamiliarizing effect: it strips familiar terms of their conventional meanings and bestows upon them new designations. This reconfiguration opens the door to a new world of meaning, reshaping the relationship between signifier and signified, altering older connections, and uncovering hidden, novel associations. The rupture from habit leads to an eruption of illumination and elevates the soul from the realm of the ordinary to the domain of wonder.

A discussion on the similarity between Ayn-al-Qużāt Hamadānī's doctrine of Habit and Ghazali's doctrine of negligence

Abstract
The term "negligence" was studied by Sufis or ethics scholars mostly from a psychological perspective or virtue ethics, but with Ghazali, this concept is much more complex and plays a very serious role in Ghazali's ontology and anthropology. slow The term "habit and habit-worship" in the mystical system of Hamadani's Ain-ul-Qadat has taken on a special meaning that has never been seen in Sufi literature before. In addition to this term, some other words and concepts such as black and white light, Muhammad and Iblis, as well as other contrasting dualities such as appearance and interiority, knowledge and ignorance, light and darkness, the world and the hereafter in the framework of Ain's mystical thoughts. Al-Qadat Hamdani has a high frequency which has somehow turned them into the motifs of his mind and language, but the term "habit and habit worship" is due to defamiliarization and removal of names from their familiar meanings and new designations. It leads us to a new world and creates a new relationship between signifiers and signifiers and changes the old relationship and discovers new and hidden links. The break from the habit leads to an eruption of light and raises it from the level of everydayness to the area of amazement.
