Wearing black attire during mourning for the Ahl al-Bayt (A) is a long-standing and significant tradition in Shi'a communities, yet its jurisprudential status has remained a subject of scholarly debate within Imami jurisprudence. The central question of this study is whether donning black garments in mourning is considered permissible or recommended, or whether it falls under the general prohibition found in certain narrations, rendering it reprehensible (makrūh) or forbidden (ḥarām).Some jurists, such as Shaykh al-Ṣadūq, regard the practice as undesirable based on the apparent meaning of the narrations that prohibit wearing black. In contrast, scholars like ‘Allāma Ḥillī justify its legitimacy—particularly in the context of mourning for the Ahl al-Bayt (A)—based on contextual cues, customary practice, and devotional norms.Using a descriptive-analytical method with emphasis on semantic and transmitter analysis of narrations, this study examines key Shi'a legal opinions and compares them with those of other Islamic schools. The findings indicate that although black clothing may be discouraged in some contexts, when worn for mourning the Ahl al-Bayt (A), it falls outside the scope of censure and into the realm of permissibility or recommendation. The study offers a nuanced critique of literalist readings and redefines the boundaries between sincere grief and imitation of oppressive figures.
